Why WhatsApp’s New Privacy Policy doesn’t apply in Europe?

While WhatsApp is struggling to explain its new privacy policy to users, Signal and Telegram are having their moment.

At the same time, it is interesting to notice that WhatsApp’s policies on data-sharing with the parent company remain unchanged for users in Europe.

This is due to Europe’s robust GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) law.

“GDPR is a well-defined law with provisions of hefty penalties which puts an obligation on businesses and service providers to collect only essential information which is absolutely necessary to provide services.” – Ankit Kumar, India Today

A stringent data protection legislation with some hefty fines goes a long way in safeguarding citizen’s data and privacy.

I hope Indian government follows the suit.
