Just finished reading ‘Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber‘ by Mike Issac.
It has some great insights into what made Uber as we know it today.
The transition from Travis Kalanick to Dara Khosrowshahi was a natural progression. Travis was a fighter and Dara is a peacemaker.
Uber needed Travis to move fast, break rules, grow big and sustain all the hardships of a startup.
But once Uber became a multi-billion dollar behemoth, the company needed Dara to make rules, stabilize and serve its users with empathy.
Microsoft experienced a very similar transition from Bill Gates to Satya Nadella.
“Microsoft’s early culture was made up of a self-selected set of mostly male employees who sometimes went too far in being tough on each other.” – Business Insider
Melinda Gates pointed out that the culture was “quite aggressive” in the early days.
Under Satya Nadella’s leadership, bureaucracy was replaced by innovation and internal politics replaced by teamwork.
A natural progression from a startup culture to sustainable enterprise culture.
